Hardware Design
Whilst we do provide hardware consultancy from clean sheet through to
initial production prototype, we are quite old fashioned in that the
prototypes are 'old school' by limiting the use of surface mount
technology as far as possible.
We do not take on anything requiring high speed logic, or high specification
processor.
This is because producing boards utilising the highest speed electronics
is a specialist skill.
We tend to limit ourselves to microcontrollers and processor with a
maximum clock speed of 20MHz, and much slower I/O speeds.
We can handle I2C and SPI interfaces along with other 'slower' protocols.
We also do not do any RF applications, again this is a specilist skill.
We can however provide some experience in the field of switch mode power
supplies, and FPGA / CPLD programmable logic design, with limits on the
maximum digital signal frequencies.
We are NOT experts on anything requiring high speed logic board layout.
Having stated what we don't do, what DO we do ?
We like to produce products that can be maintained and repaired with
basic electronic tools.
To that end, our own products are mainly low speed logic, and through
hole designs, with little or no surface mount devices.
Why do we take this approach?
This approach extends the usable life our designs/products making them
easily repaired.
Most on board complex silicon are fitted in sockets, allowing repairs and
maintenance to be performed without resorting to having to use a
soldering iron.
Our
Control Board is a prime example of
this philosophy.
We have also chosen to "open source" ALL of our designs both hardware
and software, the files for which can be freely downloaded.
